First influenza case in Waterloo Region for the 2021-2022 season

Waterloo Region – The first lab-confirmed case of influenza A has been reported in a child in the Region of Waterloo. Sporadic cases of influenza A and B are occurring across Ontario, but overall, influenza activity throughout the province is considered to be low.

Influenza immunization offers the best protection for individuals over the age of six months and is available free of charge to all residents in Ontario. It is still not too late to receive your influenza immunization.

Influenza is a respiratory infection caused primarily by influenza A and B viruses. Seasonal influenza epidemics occur annually in Canada, generally in the late fall and winter months. Symptoms of influenza typically include the sudden onset of fever, cough and muscle aches. Other common symptoms include headache, chills, loss of appetite, fatigue and sore throat. Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea may also occur, especially in children. Most people will recover within a week to 10 days, but some people are at greater risk of severe complications, such as pneumonia or death.

At this time of year, other respiratory viruses are in the community, including COVID-19. Continue to follow public health measures including:

  • Frequent hand washing with soap and water, or alcohol-based hand rub (hand sanitizer)
  • Cover your cough/sneeze
  • Stay home if you are sick
  • Do not visit persons in hospitals or high-risk congregate settings such as long-term care or retirement homes
