Federal budget supports Regional priorities

Waterloo Region – Yesterday the federal government released their 2022 budget, A Plan to Grow Our Economy and Make Life More Affordable. The document aligns with many of the priorities for the Region of Waterloo and its residents, including climate change, mental health supports, and economic growth. Housing is a key focus of the budget, through initiatives to address both housing affordability and supply.

“It is encouraging to see the federal government’s prioritization of housing,” says Regional Chair Karen Redman. “We are particularly pleased to see continued support for the Rapid Housing Initiative and Reaching Home program. We remain interested in the details of the Housing Accelerator Fund and future infrastructure investments across our community.”

Rapid Housing Initiative and Reaching Home funding has helped the Region to advance its affordable housing plan, Building Better Futures: 2,500 Homes in 5 Years. The Region has recently used these funding streams for the following projects:

  • 30 units with KW Urban Native Wigwam Project at 27 Cambridge St, Cambridge;
  • 44 units with oneROOF Youth Services at 35 Sheldon Ave, Kitchener; and
  • 41 units with YW Kitchener-Waterloo at 1470 Block Line Road, Kitchener.

Communities thrive when everyone has a place to call home. The Region of Waterloo remains committed to working with community partners and senior levels of government to improve housing affordability, supports and supply.
