Elmira resident to receive Senior of the Year Award from Region of Waterloo

Waterloo Region – Alma Alder has volunteered at the Elmira branch of the Region of Waterloo Library for over 19 years. Her dedication to the library was recognized by Regional Council with the presentation of the Senior of the Year Award.

Since 1993, Alma has performed many helpful tasks at the library. She shelves library materials, repairs books and helps with circulation duties in the Adult department. She is also a loyal book sale volunteer, who helps replenish books even on the hottest days.  Her friendly smile encourages community members to stop and shop for used books at the sale.

“Always happy to take on new challenges, Alma Alder personifies the heart of a Library volunteer,” says Library Supervisor Sheryl Tilley. “She embraced our automated circulation system, and uses a library computer to check books in and out for us when we are busy at the desk.”

Alma has the longest years of service of any Region of Waterloo Library volunteer.

“Alma is a marvelous volunteer who freely and regularly gives her time and efforts to help the library. She leads by example and makes a difference in her community,” says Katherine Seredynska, Manager of Public Services.

The Senior of the Year award is traditionally presented at Regional Council in June to celebrate Senior’s Month. The nominee must be a Region of Waterloo volunteer who is over the age of 65 and has enriched the social, cultural or civic life of our community. The award will be presented to Alma Alder at the Regional Council meeting on Wednesday, June 27.
