Electronic waste recycling fee removed
Region of Waterloo – As of July 1, 2011, the Region of Waterloo is no longer charging the residential fee for electronic waste (e-waste) recycling. E-waste includes items such as computers, monitors, stereos, VDR/DVD players, and other audio-visual equipment, which are all banned from the landfill, and are not accepted curbside with garbage. These items contain potentially hazardous materials and valuable resources that should be kept out of the landfill.
The Region of Waterloo is now an affiliate member of the Ontario Electronic Stewardship (OES) program, and the transportation and recycling of e-waste collected at the Cambridge and Waterloo transfer stations are now covered by the fees paid by consumers when purchasing electronics.
E-waste brought to the Cambridge or Waterloo transfer stations will now only be subject to the regular transfer station fee: $72 per tonne, with no charge for the first 50kg. The commercial e-waste rate remains unchanged, as the cost for handling large loads through the transfer stations remains high.
Residents and businesses looking for alternative e-waste recycling options are encouraged to visit www.recycleyourelectronics.ca to search for other approved OES recyclers.
