Douglas Bartholomew-Saunders Appointed Commissioner of Social Services
Waterloo Region – Douglas Bartholomew-Saunders has been appointed the new Commissioner of Social Services for the Region of Waterloo.
“Douglas brings to this position a deep and diverse background in human services,” said Mike Murray, Chief Administrative Officer. “I’m sure he will provide excellent leadership to the strong and committed team we have in Social Services, and will continue our tradition of providing responsive services to the community.”
Mr. Bartholomew-Saunders is currently the Director of Employment, Housing & Social Services within the Social & Community Services Department of the Regional Municipality of Halton. His career has spanned more than 30 years in municipal and provincial government, and in the not-for-profit sector. He has been responsible for various programs including young offenders, child welfare, child day care and children’s services, employment services, income support, and housing.

I have a passion for the human services and working to benefit those in need of our services,” said Mr. Bartholomew-Saunders. “I am confident that my skills and abilities will contribute to the ongoing successes in these programs. I look forward to working with Council, Regional staff and the community."
Douglas has been actively involved in a variety of community groups and professional associations, including a recent term as president of the Ontario Municipal Social Services Association.
“We’re confident that Douglas will provide strong leadership during this challenging period of funding restraint for social programs,” said Councillor Sean Strickland, Chair of the Community Services Committee.
The Region of Waterloo’s Social Services Department along with its many community partners, plan and deliver a variety of human services that sustain individuals and families in Waterloo Region. These services are designed to help residents enhance their participation in the community and ultimately improve their quality of life.
