Critical Regional projects receive joint funding
Waterloo Region – Today, the federal and provincial governments announced joint funding for 10 community, culture and recreation infrastructure projects in southwestern Ontario, including two critical Region of Waterloo projects.
The historic West Montrose Covered Bridge will receive $4.5 million from the provincial and federal governments to complete necessary repairs as part of a $6 million dollar upgrade to the bridge. This funding will replace the existing trusses with steel girders, repair and replace the roof, and re-install the fire alarm system.
Another $698,193 of the joint funding will support the a new multi-use trail that will connect our popular Iron Horse Trail with the future King Victoria Transit Hub in downtown Kitchener, planned for construction in 2021. This funding is critical, not only for the future transit hub, but also to expand active transportation opportunities for residents to be active and connected.
