Construction notice: Ottawa Street Improvements, City of Kitchener, June 3, 2024—2026

About the project

The Region is reconstructing Ottawa Street, from Fischer-Hallman Road to Mowat Boulevard in Kitchener. Improvements will include replacing existing watermains and storm sewers, replacing signals and upgrading streetlights at the Fischer-Hallman  Road and Ottawa Street intersection, constructing a new roundabout at Ottawa Street and Westmount Road intersection, replacing the Shoemaker Creek Culvert, and adding new multi-use trails and cycling facilities along Ottawa Street.

Timing — starts June 3, 2024

Construction on Ottawa Street from Fischer-Hallman Road to Pinedale Drive will start on June 3, and continue through 2024.

Construction on Ottawa Street, from Pinedale Drive to Mowat Boulevard, will start in spring 2025, with completion expected in late 2025.

Asphalt paving is planned in 2025 and 2026.

Closures

Two-way traffic will be maintained on Ottawa Street during the construction through 2024. Due to the depth and location of underground infrastructure, there will be lane restrictions in various sections.

Starting in spring 2025, we’ll need to close Ottawa Street to all through traffic for most of the season to construct the Shoemaker Creek culvert and Westmount Road roundabout. Two-way traffic will be maintained on Westmount Road.

Detour

Detour route information for the 2025 Ottawa Street closure will be provided in spring 2025.

Emergency Services (Police, Fire, Paramedics) will be notified of these road closures and detours to minimize any disruptions to services.

Pedestrian access

Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times. Pedestrians should follow the signs as they walk through the site.

Property and business access

All businesses in the construction area remain open and accessible during construction. Every effort will be made to maintain access to residential and business driveways in the construction area during working hours (7 a.m.–7 p.m.). Construction activities may temporarily impact access to entrances. We will provide notice of any interruption in advance as much as possible.

Please plan for some delays and travel carefully in the construction zone. Please follow and obey the construction signs when you drive or walk through the construction area, for your safety and for the safety of the workers.
