Coalition Stop Waterloo LRT Inc. abandons legal challenge

Waterloo Region –The Coalition Stop Waterloo LRT Inc. has abandoned its legal challenge against the Region of Waterloo.

The Coalition Stop Waterloo LRT Inc. claimed that the Region’s ION LRT Service did not conform to the Planning Act and the Environmental Assessment Act. On March 18, 2014, the Superior Court of Justice dismissed the Coalition’s motion for an interim injunction in this matter, stating that there was no contravention of the Planning Act and that the Environmental Assessment was properly completed. With this formal notification by the Coalition, its Court Application is concluded.

"We are pleased this legal challenge has come to an end,” said Regional Chair Ken Seiling. “We have always believed we had proceeded properly. Justice‎ Tucker commented in her ruling on the motion for a temporary injunction in March that she believed the Region was in compliance with legislation and the Official Plan. It is good to end this chapter and move on.”

The ground breaking for ION will take place on Friday, June 27 and is on schedule to commence service in 2017.
