City-wide installation of smart water meters set to begin late October

After a successful pilot project, the City is launching a smart water meter program to install new meters in homes throughout the city to improve the efficiency and reliability of the water system. The new meters will use advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) to provide remote water meter readings, data analysis and proactive issue detection.

The project kicks off with a Smart Water Meter Open House set for Monday, Oct. 7 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Bowman Room at Cambridge City Hall. Project staff and the city’s contractor ICONIX Waterworks will be on-site to provide an overview of the project, timeline information and to answer questions.

The city-wide installation will take place in several stages. The first stage is set to take place from October 2019 to March 2020, followed by March 2020 to September 2020 and lastly September 2020 to December 2020. Implementation is expected to be complete by the end of 2020.

“We’re looking forward to moving ahead with the full- implementation of the new smart meter infrastructure,” explains Hardy Bromberg, Deputy City Manager, Community Development. “This will enable us to deliver a higher service level to our residents and be mindful of water consumption and the environment.  Real-time data will help us more closely monitor the water system, detect potential leaks and avoid unnecessary water costs.”

During the pilot project, 1,283 meters were installed in West Preston and West Galt. An additional 2,700 water meters will be replaced or retrofit every month until December 2020.  A customer service portal is being developed which will allow residents to access their bills online and own water usage.

Residents are encouraged to visit the City’s website to see when installations are happening in their area and to schedule an appointment online.

Smart water meter installers will also be going door-to-door to contact residents and business owners to schedule appointments. All city-contracted, ICONIX installers will be clearly identified with ICONIX-branded uniforms and photo identification. Vehicles will include the City of Cambridge and ICONIX logos.
