City joins local partners to commemorate Black History Month

Every February, Canadians are invited to participate in Black History Month festivities that honour the legacy of Black Canadians, past and present. This year, the City of Cambridge is proud to partner with the Idea Exchange and the Cambridge Rhythm and Blues Committee for Rhythm & Blues presents: Black History Month - a month-long series of events featuring unique and compelling stories of Black Canadians.

Now in its second year, this celebration of black history acknowledges the many accomplishments and contributions of members of African-Canadian communities in Cambridge and across Canada. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s celebration is moving online. Event participants will experience a unique look at the historical and contemporary struggles and triumphs of Black communities in Waterloo Region through virtual presentations of Black history, art, culture, and social justice.

“Black History Month is an important time to celebrate diversity and inclusion by recognizing the important role Black Canadians play in the growth of our country,” says Mayor Kathryn McGarry. “I would like to thank and congratulate the Rhythm & Blues Committee for their resilience and innovative spirit as they present this incredible virtual experience so that everyone can learn and be inspired by the rich culture, compelling stories and enduring impact of our Black community.”

The Cambridge Rhythm & Blues Committee is a resident-led group of local members of the Black community. The name Rhythm & Blues comes from the saying “They want our rhythm but not our blues”.

Funding for this event was made possible by a grant through the Kitchener-Waterloo Community Foundation.
