Churchill Park Coyote Update

The City supports the approach of coexistence and public education in terms of the management of coyotes. In most cases, we are able to cohabitate with urban wildlife, including coyotes, without problem.

However, the close proximity to the playground at Churchill Park, as well as troublesome reports of aggressive behavior, created a public safety issue.  This is a heavily used park with a playground, splash pad, sports fields, arena and community centre surrounded by homes. Various public events are held in the park.

Community safety is our number one priority, and as such, City staff retained the services of a certified wildlife agent to safely and humanely relocate the animals away from the park under MNR guidelines. The restraining devices used in this process are certified through the International Humane Trapping Standards procedures and protocols, which includes testing for safety issues as well as animal welfare performance.

Council and staff have since received many concerns from residents and animal advocacy groups about the relocation method. Council has directed staff to assess potential alternative options going forward. The restraining devices are being removed and we are consulting further with officials and advocacy groups on the best, safest and most effective solution to protect both the animals and residents.

In the meantime, we will continue to monitor the park. Warning signs will remain posted in the area and residents are advised:

  • to not feed coyotes
  • keep pets on a leash
  • if a  coyote approaches; stand tall and make noise; back away slowly (do not run)
  • if a coyote poses an immediate threat to public safety, call 911.
