Celebrating Waterloo Region’s Role in Supporting the Well-Being of Children

Waterloo Region: The Healthy Kids Community Challenge Waterloo Region (HKCC) Steering Committee will host a closing celebration to recognize the efforts of over 300 individuals and organizations who took part in the program.

The Healthy Kids Community Challenge was a four-year initiative to support the well-being of children by promoting physical activity and healthy eating. The Waterloo Region was one of 45 communities across the province to participate in the $1.3 million program between 2015 and 2018.

The HKCC was guided by a Steering Committee with representatives from the cities of Waterloo, Cambridge, and Kitchener, the townships of Wellesley, Woolwich, Wilmot and North Dumfries, the Waterloo Catholic District School Board, and Region of Waterloo Public Health and Emergency Services. Members of the Steering Committee worked diligently since 2015 to empower children and families to be physically active, to make water their preferred beverage, to eat more fruits and vegetables, and to take small steps to reduce the use of screens.

Local media personality Mike Farwell will host the event.

“The Healthy Kids Community Challenge was successful in encouraging good habits in our children that will help build stronger communities and healthy adults,” said Farwell.

The HKCC Steering Committee invites all member municipalities, community agencies and members of the public to celebrate the initiative and to continue making child health a priority.

Those attending will learn about accomplishments of the initiative and how the committee intends to build upon the program’s success.
