Celebrate the opening of the pedestrian bridge with an afternoon by the Grand River
Cambridge, Ontario. May 11, 2018… The much-anticipated pedestrian bridge in downtown Galt is set to open Saturday, May 26 with an event at 2 p.m. The community is invited to join Mayor Doug Craig and members of council at the Cambridge Sculpture Garden at 53 Grand Ave. S. for the official bridge opening.
“This is a very exciting event for us,” remarked Mayor Doug Craig. “Cambridge has always been a river city and the pedestrian bridge will be another way for the community to experience the river and the Galt downtown core. It’s a beautiful addition to our riverscape and is sure to be a new iconic landmark for Cambridge.”
Drawing on Cambridge’s rich arts and culture scene, the opening will also feature the unveiling of a new sculpture for the garden and a sighting of the Ancient Mariners Canoe Club as they pass under the bridge for the first time. When the bridge is opened, everyone will be encouraged to walk across the bridge to a photo station on the other side where they can snap selfies to commemorate being one of the first across.
Following the opening, attendees will be able to join in one of two family-friendly activities at 2:30 p.m.: social painting or a yoga demonstration. Community members are also encouraged to bring a picnic and enjoy it along the river with family and friends with free ice cream for dessert.
The new Cambridge landmark will also be illuminated nightly with custom lighting much like the City Hall Cambridge sign. As part of the overall ‘back to the rivers’ vision for Cambridge, the new pedestrian bridge will serve as a vibrant addition to the city, providing a scenic active transportation alternative for residents and visitors alike.
