Campaign to end chronic homelessness set to launch on National Housing Day

Waterloo Region – A campaign led by two community groups set to launch this week could make Waterloo region one of the first communities in Canada to end chronic homelessness.

The ALL IN 2020 campaign to find homes for people who have been homeless the longest and have the most complex needs is a joint partnership between Wellbeing Waterloo Region and the Homelessness Housing Umbrella Group (HHUG).

“This is about saving lives now,” said Lynn Macaulay, Coordinator of ALL IN 2020. “We don’t want to wait for the provincial goal of 2025. We want to house people now in a way that we know worked well in the United States and as a pilot in Cambridge. And everyone in the community will be able to track our progress.”

Details will be unveiled during National Housing Day celebrations on Thursday, November 15. The celebrations are hosted by the Region of Waterloo.

The National Housing Day event will also honour many housing heroes in the community. Award recipients include a war veteran who does outreach with veterans who are homeless and a local elementary school that helps integrate children staying in emergency shelters into the community.

Media are invited to attend the National Housing Day event.
