Cambridge Recreation Complex set to move forward
The Cambridge Recreation Complex met a major milestone as the City of Cambridge Council approved the final piece of the design at its February 27 meeting, marking the last step in the process before tendering the project in May, while expecting to break ground in summer 2024.
The first of its kind facility in Cambridge will offer a 10-lane, 25-metre swimming pool and warm water therapeutic pool, three FIBA gymnasiums, a running/walking track and fitness area, multi-purpose rooms, Idea Exchange library, concession and park amenities combined with two schools.
Council approved the design after some final debate around the building’s washroom and locker area layout, which features 34 private change rooms, 28 private washrooms, and barrier-free accessible spaces. This design enables every visitor the ability to access private space while still maintaining the flexibility of meeting every family or person’s individual needs.
“This project has involved the most community consultation in City of Cambridge history and we are pleased to see 10 years of collaboration come to fruition,” said Hardy Bromberg, Deputy City Manager of Community Development. “This facility’s exciting modern design represents a real community hub and we feel it encompasses every individual who will be visiting it and enjoying all that this campus has to offer.”
The City of Cambridge underwent considerable community consultation throughout the various stages of design, most recently hosting a series of four public engagement sessions in December 2023. Common themes have related to safety, accessibility, operability, and overall user experience. Council and community feedback has been incorporated in the final design.
“We have listened to the ideas, thoughts, and concerns of our community members and taken their feedback throughout every step in this process,” said Mayor Jan Liggett. “Today marks the beginning of an exciting next chapter as we officially move toward construction of an impressive new facility that is sure to become one of the most incredible community spaces in Ontario.”
The 32.5-acre campus is located on City of Cambridge, Waterloo Region District School Board, and Waterloo Catholic District School Board owned lands, north of Dundas Street South and Branchton Road. The project is estimated to be completed in fall 2026.
