Cambridge Fire Department invites residents to educational Open Houses during Fire Prevention Week
Cambridge, Ontario. (October 2, 2023) –– Fire Prevention Week runs from October 8-14 this year, and the Cambridge Fire Department (CFD) is urging residents to remember that “Cooking safety starts with YOU. Pay attention to fire prevention”.
Cambridge residents are invited to the CFD’s free Open Houses to learn about fire prevention and safety during Fire Prevention Week. Open House activities include fire truck rides, cooking safety demonstrations, and more educational activities. The Open Houses will run from 6-8 p.m. on the following dates:
- October 10 at Station 1 (1625 Bishop St. N) and Station 6 (485 Boxwood Dr.)
- October 11 at Station 5 (490 Main St.)
- October 12 at Station 4 (91 St. Andrews St.)
- October 13 at Station 2 (11 Tannery St.) and Station 3 (525 King Street E.)
This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign works to educate residents on the simple yet important steps they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe when cooking.
“Cooking can be a fun activity for everyone in the home. However, unattended cooking is the leading cause of fires in the kitchen,” said Acting Fire Chief Damond Jamieson. “We’d like to remind residents that cooking safety starts with you, and ensure you are following best safety practices when using appliances in the kitchen.”
The Cambridge Fire Department wants to share these key cooking safety tips:
- Keep anything that can catch fire — oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels or curtains — away from your stovetop.
- Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, boiling, grilling, or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove.
- If you are simmering, baking, or roasting food, check it regularly, remain in the home while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you that you are cooking.
Resources around fire safety are available on the CFD’s website. To learn more about Fire Prevention Week in Cambridge, visit the Cambridge Fire Department’s website at www.cambridge.ca/FPW.
