Cambridge Council endorse contribution from Hallman Construction Ltd. for new park

Last night, Cambridge City Council endorsed a proposed contribution from Hallman Construction Ltd. (HCL) of up to $2.5 million towards a new community park within the soon-to-be developed Cambridge West subdivision; Westwood Village.

“This is indeed exciting news for Cambridge,” said Mayor Kathryn McGarry. “HCL has a very successful local track record of community-building with a focus on child and youth wellbeing and we’re thrilled to welcome them on board for this project.”

HCL and City staff have been collaboratively developing a concept design since the expression of interest earlier this year. The draft concept is for a community park and splashpad. The monetary contribution of between $2 - 2.5 million will provide funding for design, construction and six years of maintenance.

The park will incorporate Council-approved Westwood Village design guidelines. HCL is one of four developers constructing the Westwood Village subdivision.

The park will service the 4,000-6,000 residents of Westwood Village and surrounding areas. It is expected to feature a variety of amenities such as multi-use courts, special seating areas, shade structures, parking, play structures, a washroom building, and a picnic shelter. The park will connect to the proposed school site and to the larger community through a pedestrian bridge and trail system.

“Hallman Construction is a legacy builder,” said Paul Britton, Vice President/Treasurer of MHBC Planning, Urban Design & Landscape Architecture.Hallman’s perspective is that it’s not just about developing land but building great communities. It is a privilege to work closely with City staff, elected officials and the public in realizing a shared vision for the Westwood Village Community.”

Next steps on this project will include public consultation on the concept design and finalizing the contribution agreement. Both the design and agreement will then be brought back to City Council for approval. It is anticipated that park construction will begin in the fall of 2021 with a planned opening for spring 2022.
