Call for applications to the Sustainable Food Security Fund

Whitby, Ontario – The Region of Durham is accepting applications to the Sustainable Food Security Fund, to support access to fresh, nutritious food for residents experiencing food insecurity.

What: The Sustainable Food Security Fund supports local non-profit organizations with initiatives that promote long-term solutions to improve food security in Durham Region. Examples of projects include market-style food banks, community gardens, nutrition education programs, innovative ideas to recover surplus food from grocery stores, amongst other initiatives that support food security.

When: Applications open March 24 and remain open until all funding is allocated. The 2025 funding limit is up to a maximum of $50,000 per project.

Why: One in four households is experiencing food insecurity in Durham Region. The goal of the Sustainable Food Security Fund is to increase access to fresh, nutritious food; promote dignity for residents accessing food programs; contribute to sustainable food security solutions; increase efficiency within the food distribution system; and build capacity of existing food programs.
