Be Prepared for Cold Weather (1)
Despite unseasonably warm temperatures this winter in Waterloo Region, Public Health would like to remind residents to be prepared for extreme cold and wind chill events. When cold temperatures and wind chill factors are forecasted to reach -25°C (the point where frostbite becomes a risk) cold-related health effects are more likely to occur. Elderly persons, infants, and young children, among others, are at greater risk from exposure to extreme cold and wind chill events.
Be prepared for extreme cold events by:
- Listening to the weather forecast before going outside
- Planning ahead and modifying your plans according to the weather
- Dressing warmly (e.g. hats, mitts, scarf, etc.)
- Staying dry
- Knowing when to limit your outdoor activity
While it is important to be active and enjoy the outdoors during the winter months, please remember to take precautions to avoid cold-related injuries such as frostbite and hypothermia.
