Twin City

An official Twinning Ceremony took place on October 4, 1968 to recognize and celebrate the similarities of the City of St. Catharines and the Port of Spain, the capital of Trinidad and Tobago. The event was held in Port of Spain and declared the Mundialization of St. Catharines and the Twinning of our two cities.

This special event was attended by the Mayor of St. Catharines, Mayor Mackenzie A. Chown and the Mayor of Port-of-Spain, Mayor J. Hamilton Holder.

How we became a Twin City

When Phillip Atteck, a Trinidadian from Port of Spain, visited the City of St. Catharines to give an informative lecture about Trinidad and Tobago, he pointed out the many similarities we had with Port of Spain. The most notable similarity was the friendliness of our people. This realization sparked the commemoration and twinning of our two cities.

Our similarities

We celebrated our similarities at the time, including:

  • Population of 120,000
  • One university
  • Surrounded by agriculture
  • Radio stations operating on the same frequency
  • Active chapters from the same service clubs
  • Port cities
  • Friendly community
