Signs

If you’re placing a portable sign or erecting / installing any other type of sign in St. Catharines, you must apply for a permit.

Permits are required to ensure that all signs comply with the Ontario Building Code, as well as City zoning and sign by-laws.

How to apply:

Portable signs

Submit a completed Sign or Swimming Pool Enclosure Permit application to Planning and Building Services by mail or email. Be sure to include:

  • Written permission from the property owner
  • A site plan
  • Two sets of complete construction drawings, drawn to scale*
  • Approval from Niagara Region, if the sign is on a regional road
  • Applicable permit fees

*If submitting by email, only one set of drawings is required.

Other types of signs

Permits are also required for the following sign types:

  • Billboard / third-party signs
  • Ground signs
  • Pole signs
  • Flag or wrap signs on private utility poles
  • Wall signs

Submit a completed Building Permit Application and Supplemental Information - Sign Form to Planning and Building Services by mail or email. Be sure to include:

  • Two sets of complete construction drawings, drawn to scale*
  • Applicable permit fees

*If submitting by email, only one set of drawings is required.

Completing the application process

You will need to pay applicable fees before your application can be processed. Refer to the Rates and Fees Guide to find the building permit application fees for signs and see payment options.

Once your permit is issued, you must schedule inspections - outlined on the permit - at least 48 hours in advance.
