Immigration

The 2026-2030 Immigration Strategy with, and supports, the City of Dieppe’s mission and vision. It also builds on the City’s organizational values of integrity, inclusion and innovation. The Strategy actively supports inclusion in the city.

Focusing its efforts on settlement and the long-term integration of immigrants, the new Immigration Strategy is built around four key focus areas. These focus areas address the key issues identified and support the achievement of the City of Dieppe’s Vision 2035. The Strategy’s focus on immigration is also aligned with the main stages of the immigration journey, namely attraction, welcoming, integration and retention, spanning the process from early planning through long-term integration into the community.

Focus areas

  • Inclusion: A space for ongoing dialogue
  • Attraction: A choice destination with a strong francophone presence
  • Welcoming: An open and supportive environment
  • Integration and retention: A place to put down roots

Strategic objectives

Strategic objectives are associated with each focus area and outline how the City intends to address its key priorities.

  1. Support immigrants in preparing for their arrival in Dieppe by facilitating the communication of information to help them better understand the local environment and labour market.
  2. Raise awareness among the public and employers about cultural diversity and the welcoming of new residents, including French-speaking immigrants who do not speak English.
  3. Work with partners to improve access to resources, services and employment, in support of broader objectives, to strengthen the francophone community’s capacity to welcome newcomers.
  4. Enhance the municipality’s ability to adapt to the needs of immigrants and other diverse groups.
  5. Support immigrants in navigating municipal services and bylaws.
  6. Create opportunities for the local community and people from immigrant and culturally diverse backgrounds to meet, exchange and build mutual understanding.
  7. Promote access to employment for people with an immigration background by raising awareness and supporting the business and education communities.
  8. Work with economic development partners to bolster support for immigrant entrepreneurship.
  9. Encourage people who have already settled in Dieppe to share their experiences with prospective immigrants.

Maria AdelaidaMaria Adelaida Fernandez, who is originally from Colombia, told us about her experience immigrating to Dieppe with her husband and children in 2021.

“It was late in 2018 that we started the process of immigrating to Canada. After receiving an invitation from New Brunswick, we took all the necessary steps and received our nomination papers in 2020.

“Our research on the web told us that Dieppe was the largest Francophone city in the province and was part of a region with a booming economy. The schools are good, there are numerous cultural and sporting activities and the community is welcoming and kind. The presence of Roméo-LeBlanc International Airport within the city limits is also an asset.

“In order to maintain our dearest traditions in our lives in Dieppe, we celebrate Navidad, which means Christmas, with our Colombian friends. It’s a time for traditional songs and prayers. Since we’ve lived here we’ve discovered the tradition of Thanksgiving.

“Among the things we’re very proud of are having bought a house and having met Mayor Yvon Lapierre. The Centre d’accueil et d’accompagnement francophone des immigrants du Sud-Est du Nouveau-Brunswick does an exceptional job. We especially enjoyed those activities aimed at helping us to become part of the community, such as yoga or the women’s cycling club.

“Dieppe is a super community, so don’t be shy to participate in the activities around you!”
