Environment
The RDCO aims to initiate and support efforts to reduce our environmental footprint, adapt to climate change and increase opportunities to connect with nature. In collaboration with others, the RDCO develops strategies, plans and actions to protect watersheds and sensitive ecosystems, care for our lakes and maintain foreshore areas. We also work with partners and other levels of government to manage our solid wastes, address dangers from flooding and wildfires and enhance our region's ecosystems. As we look forward, enhancing the level of integration between the Regional Growth Strategy and transportation planning in the Central Okanagan is also a priority.
Air qualityThe Regional Air Quality Program is a joint initiative ofthe RDCO, City of Kelowna, City of West Kelowna, District of Peachland, the District of Lake Country and Westbank First Nation, guided by the Clean Air Strategy report.
Climate actionThe RDCO partnered with the regional districts of North Okanagan and Okanagan Similkameen on the Climate Projections Report for the Okanagan, providing the scientific foundation to make informed decisions.
Environmental planningThe RDCO oversees several initiatives for environmental planning in the region, including lake and foreshore protection strategy, floodplain management plan, sensitive ecosystem inventory and mapping and state of the basin report.
TransportationThe RDCO prioritizes the efficient and safe movement of people in the region. Our board advocacy actions aim to shape investment and decisions for infrastructure, improve equity in transportation options and to enhance the integration between the Regional Growth Strategy and transportation planning.
