News Digest
With News Digest, you can send your site's News and Blogs subscribers a daily or weekly recap of recently-published News and Blogs pages to keep them informed. This may also reduce subscribers' email notification overload if pages are included in digest emails rather than instant notifications, although you are able to choose both types when publishing a News or Blog page.
Requirements
- You must already have News v3 installed and configured in i:Create.
- News Digest requires a small amount of configuration, as well as creation of your custom email template for digest emails.
- To request News Digest, please speak with your eSolutions Project Manager.
News Digest Configuration
Digest options must be configured before users can include a published page in the digest. Until this is configured, no digest emails will be sent to subscribers.
News Digest Configuration options are found:
- under the More + menu > News Digest Configuration
- on the Publish Selected Page(s) model > Configure News Digest link
-
Delivery Frequency: how often digest emails are sent. Options are daily or weekly.
-
Delivery Time: when the digest emails get sent. This is in the same time zone that is configured for your site.
-
If page edits are made: this determines what happens when a page that was previously published and included in the digest email is edited, but not republished before the News Digest email is delivered:
-
Remove page from next News Digest email: (default behavior) the page won’t be included in the next News Digest email until it is republished (and the publisher selects the “Include in next News Digest email” option). Note: this is currently the only News Digest Configuration option available for handling page edits.
- Keep last published page in News Digest email: the edited/unpublished page won’t be included in the next News Digest email, but the previously published version of the page will be included. The purpose of this option is to ensure clients who regularly update certain pages (e.g. a Job Listings page) can still include recent updates in a News Digest email, even after a page is edited (but not yet published).
Publishing to the News Digest
To add a page to the next digest email occurring after the publishing date: navigate to the Publish screen (click the “Publish” button on the Page List screen), then select the “Include in next News Digest email” option.
- By default, this box will be checked when publishing a page. Uncheck to exclude a page from the News Digest email.
- The publisher can choose to include a page in the News Digest email and/or as an instant notification too - instant notifications and News Digest notifications are not mutually exclusive.
After publishing:
- You can later see whether a page is scheduled to be included in the next News Digest: navigate to the Publish screen - a message “Included in News Digest email” will display
- You can remove a page from a future News Digest email: navigate to the Publish screen, then click the “Remove From News Digest” button. If a page that was published and included in the next News Digest email gets unpublished before the News Digest email is delivered, the page will be removed from that News Digest email.
News Digest Email Delivery
Information on emails delivered to subscribers:
-
News Digest emails delivery timing: this is determined by the News Digest Configuration setup.
-
News Digest emails are sent only to subscribers who have subscribed to at least one of the categories of the underlying pages included.
-
Emails received are different for each subscriber - they only contain content from categories a subscriber has subscribed to.
-
E.g. a subscriber who has subscribed to only a category called “Arts and Entertainment” will not see recently a published page about a new zoning bylaw in their next digest email.
-
-
Subscribers do not have to subscribe to digest emails - they’ll receive digests based on their subscribed categories.
-
Currently, there is no option to allow clients to offer “News Digest-only” subscriptions.
-
-
Text included in the digest email for each article:
- The page’s heading (as pulled from Page List > Properties > SEO Title field), a link to the page, and date + time published.
-
Custom message vs. full article text: when publishing, the publisher can choose to include a custom message that will appear in the email (in addition to heading, link, and date + time) or the full article text. When choosing Custom, the textbox's default value will include the first 50 words of your article as a suggested message, although you can edit or delete this content.
Digest emails delivered to subscribers are based on your chosen or custom templates. Here is an example of a generic template used for an digest email:
