News Categories
Whenever you create a news or alert item, you will need to assign it to a news category. Categories have several basic functions. When creating news feeds, you can select what to show in the feed based on categories. The category determines if the items you add will be regular news items or alerts. A category defines which social media feeds are associated with each news item or alert.
To learn how to add a news item to a specific category visit the adding a news or alert item section.
Create a new category
To create a new category:
- Select the “More +” dropdown menu from the Utility Bar located at the top of the workbench
- Select “Category” from the dropdown menu
- Click the “Add New Category” button at the upper right of the category list

Edit the name of the category
Once you've created a news category, you can name the category by:
- Clicking the pencil icon next to your category to open the “Edit Category” pop-up box
- In the “Name” field, you can update the name of your category if required
- Select the “Save” button to finalize the name
Do not edit the “Supported Modules” dropdown menu unless you have specific instruction to do so. This field should have no impact on your news item unless you have custom modules designed to support the news feeds.
Choose a template
You can select a news category template in i:Create. To do this, select the “More +” menu from the Utility Bar at the top of the workbench. Select “Category” from the dropdown and click the “Edit” icon next to your target category. Select the “Templates” tab to open a list of valid news templates. If you would like a template to have access to a new news category, check the associated box.
This allows you to limit certain categories to certain sections on your website, e.g., you likely won't want the Fire news category to show up under your Tourism news.
Add social media to the news category
To incorporate social media into your news feed:
- Add a social media channel to the news category
- Select the “More +” dropdown menu from the Utility Bar located at the top of the workbench
- Select “Category” from the dropdown menu
- Click the “Edit” icon next to your target category
- Select the “Social Media Channels” tab
- Check off each social media feed that will connect to the category
If the social media platforms you need aren't there, you will need to add a social media feed to your website.
After you save, you can change the settings in the future by clicking the “Edit” button.
