Add, Edit, Clone and Delete Menu Items

Learn how to add, delete and move menu items using the Menu Manger in the i:Create Content Management System (i:Create). After you've made changes to a menu, you need to publish the menu in order for the changes to appear on your website.

Lock and unlock the menu

Before you can add, delete or move pages in Menu Manager, you need to lock the menu. Select the “Lock” button from the “Working Menu” toolbar in Menu Manger. By locking the menu, you ensure that no one else can edit the menu at the same time.

To add an item to one of your menus, select the “+” icon next to the menu you want to edit. A list of menu options will appear. Click the title of the menu that you would like to add a menu link to. For example, if you select “Living Here,” you would be adding a menu link to appear under the “Living Here” section of your website.

Once you've selected the appropriate menu:

  1. Select the “New Menu” button from the “Working Menu” toolbar
  2. Complete the “Link Text” field by adding the name of the page you'd like to link to. (This field will autofill as you begin typing. This is the wording that will appear in the menu on your live website.)
  3. Select the appropriate page name from the autofill
  4. Make sure the “In Sitemap,” “Visible” and “Default Link” checkboxes are selected
  5. Click the “Save” button to add the page to your menu
  6. The “Link Text” should now be added to the appropriate menu on the left of the screen. You will need to publish the menu in order for these changes to appear on your live website.

Clone pages

Clone pages are pages that appear in multiple different menus on your website and have the exact same content. To set up a link to a clone page, follow the same steps as you would to add a page to a menu but make sure that the “Default Link” checkbox is not selected.

Direct links

You may want to have a link in your website navigation that takes visitors to an external website.

To add a direct link to your menu:

  1. Select the “New Menu” button from the “Working Menu” toolbar
  2. Complete the “Link Text” with the words you'd like displayed in the menu
  3. Add the website URL address in the “URL” field
  4. Select the “New Window” checkbox to ensure that the link will open in a new window when someone selects this option from the menu
  5. Make sure the “In Sitemap,” “Visible” and “Default Link” checkboxes are selected

Edit a menu link

When you add a new menu item to Menu Manager, there are a variety of fields and checkboxes that you can complete to set up the link. You can also edit a menu item at any point in time by clicking the item from the menu and then editing the necessary fields.

Link Text

This is the text your visitors will see in the menu on your website. This field will fill in automatically if the page name exists in your website.

URL

This is the URL, or website address, the menu link will direct visitors to. For internal pages, you can type in the name of the page and this field should automatically fill. If you are creating a link to an external website, you will need to copy the URL address from the website that you'd like the menu item to link to.

For example, you may have a “Library” item in your menu that links off to the separate library website when someone selects the menu item.

Title

In this field, you will enter the title text that will appear when a visitor moves their mouse over the menu item link.

Image Name

In most cases, this field will remain blank. If you see an entry in this location, do not edit it. This was likely pre-built by eSolutionsGroup and will appear as an icon or graphic attached to the link in your menu. Learn how to set-up menu images if you'd like an image link to appear in a drop-down menu.

New Window

If you select the “New Window” checkbox, this will cause the link to open in a new browser window or tab. You should use this option if you are linking to an external website.

In Sitemap

Each website created by eSolutionsGroup has a sitemap that shows the entire website structure with all menus and pages. Checking this box will automatically add the new menu item to the sitemap. Unchecking it will make the new menu item invisible on the sitemap.

Default Link

You should always leave the “Default Link” checked unless you are creating multiple links to the same page, e.g., a clone page.

Visible

This checkbox determines whether a page is visible in the menu. This option can be useful if you are performing page maintenance and you don't want visitors going to the page until your updates are complete. Rechecking this box will add the link back into the menu.

Indent Level

You can ignore this field.

Page Properties

Selecting “Page Properties” opens the page properties pop-up box, which allows you to edit the properties for that specific web page.

Deleting an item from the menu doesn't delete the associated page or file from your website. Instead, it just removes the link from the menu. Learn how to delete a page from your website.

To delete a menu item:

  1. Navigate to the menu link that you'd like to remove from the menu navigation
  2. Select the menu item you want to delete
  3. Select the “Delete” button to the right of the page

This will remove the menu item from the menu you selected. Make sure to publish the menu in order for your changes to appear on the live website.

To move a menu item within the same menu:

  1. Select the menu item you want to move
  2. Press the “Up” or “Down” buttons in the “Working Menu” toolbar

This will move the item up or down the list of other items.

To move a menu item from one menu to another menu:

  1. Select the menu item you want to move
  2. Click the “Cut” button from the “Working Menu” toolbar
  3. Select the menu where you want to add the menu item within Menu Manager
  4. Click the “Paste” button from the “Working Menu” toolbar

The menu item should now appear in the appropriate new menu.

We recommend that all drop down items in a menu be arranged in alphabetical order. This helps with navigation on your website.

Navigate the menus

There is a variety of different menus in Menu Manager.

The MainNav menu includes each of the top level, or main vertical, menus on your website. These are typically displayed near the top of your website.

Examples of MainNav pages include:

  • Living Here
  • Town Hall
  • Play and Explore

Through the MainNav, you can add and delete menu items that you can then link to pages on your website. Depending on your website design, there may be a maximum number of MainNav menus.

The TopNav menu is displayed at the very top of your website above the MainNav and provides quick links to pages on your website. You will determine these menu items during the design phase of the website development. You can edit the menu at any point.

The FooterNav is a menu at the very bottom of your website and often displays links to your sitemap, statement, contact module, etc. You will determine these menu items during the design phase of your website. You can edit the menu at any point.

Custom menus

Depending on your website design, there are different custom menus available in i:Create, such as:

Your website may have an “I Want To…” menu that provides quick links to actionable pages on your website. You can change these links at any point.

Some examples of links that might appear in an “I Want To…” menu are:

  • Pay a Parking Ticket
  • Apply for a Burn Permit
  • Apply for a Job

Depending on your website design, your website may have a SocialLinks menu. This menu will display links to different social media platforms.

Social media links:

  • Facebook
  • Linked In
  • Twitter
  • Instagram

You can add or remove social media links in the SocialLinks menu.
