Create a GA4 Property for a Site that Doesn't Have a UA Property (Umbraco)
The following setup will guide you through the creation and configuration of a new Google Analytics 4 (GA4) property when a Universal Analytics (UA) property doesn't already exist for your Umbraco CMS website.
The GA4 property will start to gather analytics data from the date that it has been setup and properly configured.
Please note, you must have a Google Analytics account and login registered to your website in order to perform these instructions. If you are unsure of your login or Google Analytics access status, please view our Frequently Asked Questions.
Creating a new Google Analytics 4 property
Follow the instructions below to create your GA4 property using the GA4 setup assistant wizard.
- In Google Analytics, select "Admin" (lower left).
- In the "Account" column, ensure that your account is selected.
- In the "Property" column, click on "Create Property".
- Enter a name for the property (i.e., "My Business, Inc. website") and select the reporting time zone and currency. Click "Next".
- Select your industry category and business size and then select "Create".
- Next, click on "Web" to add a web stream.
- Set up the web stream by defining the website URL and giving the stream a name. Click on the cog icon in the "Enhanced measurement" section to ensure all measurements are enabled.
- In the "Enhanced measurements" settings, ensure that the "Site search" settings are properly listed. Select "Show advanced settings" in the "Site search" section and enter the proper search term query parameter. For example, "cludoquery" (Cludo search) and "search" (Google search), etc. Click "Save" once finished and then click on "Create stream" to create your new stream.
- Next, you will need to grab the new GA4 property script and add it to the existing website. Select "See your GA4 property".
- In the following screen, open the "Global site tag" accordion and copy the script. Please send this newly created GA4 Measurement ID, along with your website URL to GHD Digital via our support centre, so we can input the new configuration on the site. There is no cost for this ID input.
