Page Descriptions and Metadata

A page description, or Description Meta Tag, is a brief summary or overview of what a page is about that displays in search results. The page description should be a sentence or two that describes the content available on the page. The page description helps visitors and search engines recognize the different pages on your site and contributes to more accurate information on the site and in search results.

When a user searches a page, the description is the brief, grey text that appears under the page title in the search results in Google, for example. They help users decide whether or not to click on a page or keep scanning the results for something that more clearly or accurately describes the content they are looking for.

Create unique descriptions for each page

There should be only one unique page description per page, and it should not be more than 155 characters in length.

Adding a page description in i:Create

You can add in a page's description by opening that page and then going into i:Create's edit mode:

  1. Select the “gear” icon to open a page's properties
  2. Enter the page description under the “Description” field

Accurately summarize the page content

Write a description that relates to the content of the page. Never include words or content that are not included on the page. Create your own unique description and avoid copy and pasting in page content. Create specific descriptions rather than using generic ones like "This is a web page" or "Page about Wikipedia." Make sure to summarize a page using short sentences rather than filling in lists of keywords.
