We do more than plow and salt roads after it snows. Strong winds after a snowstorm can lead to drifting snow. We patrol roads to look out for drifting snow conditions.
Snow Clearing Issue
The Province of Ontario, The Regional Municipality of Durham and your local area municipality all maintain Durham Region's roads in the winter.
During the winter, Regional roads are patrolled seven days a week. Winter maintenance equipment is deployed if needed.
Have you seen a winter maintenance issue? Contact your local Region of Durham Works Department depot.
Common issues
Black ice can form when the air warms up suddenly. After a long period of cold weather, the road is still below freezing temperature.
We are always monitoring the weather. We can take actions to reduce black ice on our roads. We have an Anti-icing Program to reduce black ice on our roads.
High winds and blowing snow can lead to poor visibility. This can cause damage to rural roadside mailboxes. We have a Rural Mailbox Replacement Policy for when our equipment damages your mailbox.
- Follow Canada Post's Rural Mailbox Guidelines when you place your mailbox. Maintain your mailbox.
- If you placed your mailbox according to the Rural Mailbox Guidelines, and we damaged it, we will replace or fix it.
- If we can, we will repair your mailbox. If not, we will replace it with a standard size mailbox. The replacement mailbox may not be the same as your previous one. We will replace it as soon as possible.
- You are responsible for making temporary arrangements for mail delivery until we replace your mailbox.
