How do I request an accommodation?
You may request accommodation at any point during the recruitment and selection process by contacting our talent acquisition team directly by email at RecruitingHelp@durham.ca. The Region will fairly, thoroughly, and effectively respond to the accommodation request and will fully explore accommodation options applying the principles of dignity, individualization, inclusion, and full participation.
We will work with you to understand your needs and collaboratively identify reasonable accommodation. In some cases, we may request supporting documentation/information to ensure that we provide you with the most appropriate accommodation.
Requests for accommodation may involve disclosing sensitive information. The information provided will be treated as confidential and shared only as needed to evaluate the accommodation request and to implement the accommodation.
The request for accommodation during the competition process will not negatively affect the evaluation process, and your need for accommodation will not be considered when making a hiring decision.
What type of accommodation is available to support me during the recruitment and selection process?
Accommodating employment candidates during the recruitment and selection process ensures a fair, inclusive, and accessible hiring process. Accommodation needs can vary widely so each accommodation request will be assessed on a case-by-case basis to meet individual needs and requirements of each circumstance. General reasonable accommodation during the hiring process may include, but is not limited to, the following:
- Providing materials in alternative accessible formats or providing multiple formats (e.g. large print).
- Allowing extra time for assessments and/or responses during an interview for those who benefit from additional processing time.
- Allowing interpreters (e.g. ASL)
- Captioning or communication aids.
- Using adaptive technology (e.g. speech to text tools or screen magnifiers) or assistive devices.
- Providing flexibility in scheduling/timing.
Where can I get a Police Record Check, if required?
What happens if I have a police record?
A police record may not preclude you from employment with the Region and various factors will be considered to determine suitability for employment. For example, the relevance of the offence to the work that will be performed or the date of the offence.
If you have charges and/or findings of guilt for any criminal offences, we will:
- Review the circumstances of the conviction and/or finding of guilt and the particulars of the offence involved.
- Consider the seriousness/nature of offence and timing of the offence.
- Determine the relevance to the position and any rehabilitation efforts taken.
- Provide you with an opportunity to explain the circumstances and share any supporting information that can help in conducting a fulsome risk assessment.
Our Police Records Check Policy is consistent with the Ontario Human Rights Code and any other applicable legislation.

I am an internationally trained professional. How can I have my credentials assessed in Canada?
We recognize foreign educational credentials if they have been evaluated by a recognized credential evaluation organization. This ensures that your qualifications are comparable to Canadian standards and are valid for employment purposes.
We accept evaluations from organizations that are members of reputable professional associations, such as:
- World Education Services (WES) - https://www.wes.org/ca
- International Credential Assessment Service of Canada (ICAS) - https://www.icascanada.ca/new/default.aspx
How to Get Your Credentials Evaluated:
- Select an evaluation service.
- Follow the instructions provided by the evaluation service to submit your educational documents.
- Once your credentials have been assessed, you will receive a report detailing the equivalency of your qualifications.
Some jobs in Canada are regulated, meaning you must be licensed or certified by a provincial or territorial regulatory body. This includes professions like:
- Doctors and Dentists
- Nurses
- Engineers
- Social workers and Early Childhood Educators
- Tradespersons such as Electricians, Millwrights, Plumbers, etc
Each province or territory may have different requirements, so it is important to start the credential recognition process early.
