Weight Restriction Season

Weight restriction season happens in the spring. The Regional Municipality of Durham and local municipalities restrict the operation of motor vehicles on designated roads. This affects vehicles that are heavier than 5,000 kilograms or five tonnes per axle. Weight restrictions are enacted under the authority of the Highway Traffic Act and Regional By-law 26-2018.

Preventing road damage

We need weight restrictions to prevent damage to Regional roads.

In the spring, frozen roads start to thaw. The thawing water may not drain out of the gravel that is under the pavement. This is because the surrounding soil may be frozen or too solid. The water will soak into the gravel. When the water is absorbed, the pavement will temporarily lose strength. When this happens, the pavement cannot support vehicles that are heavier than 5,000 kilograms or five tonnes per axle.

Start and end dates

The 2026 spring weight restrictions for roads under the jurisdiction of the Region of Durham will be implemented at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, March 9, and will tentatively run until April 30, however unseasonal weather may alter the finish date. The actual finish date will be based on current road conditions and the forecasted thaw period. This webpage will be updated with any alterations to the lifting dates.
Signs will be erected on all Region roads where weight restrictions are in effect. Refer to the Weight Restriction map or road listing for detailed locations.
Please note that weight restrictions for local area municipality roads may differ from Durham Region. Please contact your local area municipality for details on their weight restrictions.

Weight Restriction Season enforcement

Durham Regional Police Service and the Ministry of Transportation Ontario monitor vehicles to enforce weight restrictions. Most public utility and emergency vehicles are exempt. Other vehicles may also be exempted through a request made in writing to the Region. You need to tell us your route and the reason for needing an exemption. These vehicles include:
Liquid or gas heating fuel
Livestock feed
Poultry or milk
Vehicles operating on behalf of a municipality
