Accessible (Modified) Housing
Some social housing providers in Durham Region offer modified units that are designed to be accessible for individuals who use a wheelchair or have other mobility-related needs. These units may include features such as wider doorways, roll-in showers, grab bars, and lowered countertops to support independent living.
Durham Access to Social Housing (DASH) manages the waitlist for these modified units. To be considered, applicants must submit medical documentation confirming the presence of a disability or medical condition and outlining the specific modifications required. This information must be provided using the Medical Request for Modified Unit Application form, completed by a regulated health practitioner. To apply, complete the DASH Waitlist Application and the Medical Request for Modified Unit Application.
Please note that using a mobility aid such as a walker, scooter, or wheelchair does not automatically qualify a household for a modified unit. To be considered for a modified unit, a medical professional must confirm that a household member requires specific accessibility features. If you are also eligible for rent-geared-to-income (RGI) assistance, you will begin paying RGI rent once you move into a modified unit.
You may also be able to find modified units outside of social housing.
